Hanák Competition Superb GTR2 is a premium range of lightweight fly rods designed for modern river fishing and nymphing, featuring two different interchangeable tips. Each rod comes with a standard hollow tip and a finer Solid Tip with an ultra-thin solid carbon section. This allows you to adapt the rod to the flies, leader diameter and fishing technique you are using.
The blank combines Japanese TORAYCA T1100G carbon with Hexagon Graphene+. Seven models in line weights #2 and #3 cover lengths from 298 to 351 cm, ranging from shorter, delicate rods to long nymphing models designed for maximum reach and control.
Key Benefits
- Two tips in one rod: the standard hollow tip provides a more versatile and direct feel, while the finer Solid Tip is designed for small flies and very fine leaders.
- 4 + 1 construction: the four-piece rod comes with a second complete interchangeable tip, allowing you to change the character of the rod directly on the river.
- TORAYCA T1100G and Hexagon Graphene+: the combination of advanced carbon materials allows for a lightweight blank with the stability and power required for modern nymphing.
- Low weight: depending on the model, the rods weigh only 76 to 92 g, an important advantage when holding a long nymphing rod in an elevated position throughout the day.
- Carbon handle: its direct connection to the blank improves transmission of contact with the nymphing setup and helps detect subtle takes.
- Anti-tangle guide design: the final three guides on each tip are set at a 45° angle to help reduce tangling with fine leaders.
- Lightweight tip guides: a shortened tube and teardrop shape further reduce the risk of the leader catching around the rod tip.
- Unsanded blank: the matt, unpainted surface helps reduce wet leader adhesion to the blank, particularly when nymphing in rainy conditions.
Two Tips: Which One Should You Use?
Standard Hollow Tip
The more versatile option for general nymphing and situations where you prefer a more direct rod response and additional support when controlling the setup. It is also a practical choice when the finest leaders and smallest flies are not your main priority.
Solid Tip
The finer solid carbon tip is designed for delicate presentation of small flies and fishing with very fine leaders. The softer tip section also absorbs sudden movements of the fish during the fight and helps reduce the risk of smaller trout coming unhooked.
Which Hanák Superb GTR2 Should You Choose?
Start by choosing between the finer #2 models and the more versatile #3 models. Then select the length according to the size of the river and the reach you require. Shorter models provide easier handling, while longer rods offer greater reach and improved control of the nymphing setup throughout the drift.
GTR2 299 – Short and Lightweight #2
The shortest and lightest model in the range for delicate river fishing. At 298 cm, line weight #2 and only 76 g, it is particularly suitable for smaller waters and situations where easy handling and delicate presentation are more important than maximum reach.
GTR2 2103 – Versatile Length in #2
A delicate #2 with more reach than the 299. The 313 cm length provides a useful balance between handling and control of the nymphing setup. A good choice for anglers who want a light #2 without being limited by a shorter rod.
GTR2 2108 – Long and Delicate #2
The longest #2 model is designed for nymphing where both reach and a delicate setup are important. The 325 cm length improves leader and nymph control, while the small carbon fighting butt helps balance the longer rod.
GTR2 3100 – Compact and Versatile #3
The shortest #3 model for anglers who want more power than the #2 rods while maintaining excellent handling. The 305 cm length and low weight of 79 g make it a practical option for general river nymphing.
GTR2 3106 – Versatile #3 with Additional Reach
The 320 cm #3 combines a versatile line weight with additional reach for controlling the nymphing setup. It is a good choice for anglers looking for a longer nymphing rod without moving to the extreme lengths of the 3110 or 3116.
GTR2 3110 – Long #3 with Carbon Fighting Butt
The 336 cm length provides significantly greater reach for modern nymphing. This model is designed for situations where leader and drift control at greater distance are a priority. The small carbon fighting butt also helps balance the longer blank.
GTR2 3116 – Maximum Reach
The longest rod in the range at 351 cm is designed for nymphing where maximum reach and control are the main priorities. The carbon fighting butt and down-locking reel seat help position the reel farther back, improving the balance of the long rod.

Detailed Description
Hanák Competition Superb GTR2 was developed as a limited series to mark the 30th anniversary of Hanák Competition. The blank combines TORAYCA T1100G with Hexagon Graphene+ to achieve low weight, sensitivity and the stability required from a long modern nymphing rod.
The most important feature of the GTR2 range is the twin-tip system. The standard hollow tip can be replaced with a finer Solid Tip featuring an ultra-thin solid carbon section. This allows you to change the character of the upper section of the rod without changing the entire rod.
The rods are fitted with slim black titanium SIC stripping guides and hard-chromed single-foot running guides with a black nickel finish. The final three guides on each tip are positioned at a 45° angle to help reduce tangling with fine leaders and make them easier to release if a tangle occurs.
The tip guides are lightweight and feature a shortened tube and teardrop shape designed to reduce the risk of the leader catching around the rod tip.
The carbon handle is directly connected to the blank to improve transmission of contact with the nymphing setup. The lightweight black reel seat features a carbon insert and a locking groove that helps prevent the reel foot from rotating.
The 299, 2103, 3100 and 3106 models feature a conventional configuration without a fighting butt. The 2108 and 3110 models have a small carbon fighting butt. The longest 3116 combines a carbon fighting butt with a down-locking reel seat to improve the balance of the longer rod.
The blank has a matt grey, unpainted and unsanded finish. Its surface structure helps reduce the tendency of a wet leader to stick to the blank, which is particularly useful when nymphing in wet or rainy conditions.
Each rod is supplied in a rigid protective tube with separate compartments for the individual rod sections.
What to Pair the Rod With
Choose your reel and nymphing setup according to the specific GTR2 length and your fishing style. With longer nymphing rods, the overall balance of the setup is just as important as the weight of the reel itself.
- #2 models: ideal for fine nymphing setups, small flies and thin tippets where the sensitivity of the Solid Tip can be fully utilised.
- #3 models: a more versatile option for nymphing, providing additional reserve when controlling the setup and playing fish.
- 2108, 3110 and 3116: pay particular attention to overall rod and reel balance, as the additional rod length has a significant effect on how the setup feels in the hand.
FAQ
What does the 4 + 1 construction mean?
