Backing lines are wound up on a fly fishing reel under a fly lines for two reasons. On the one hand, they reduce the wear and tear of fly lines, which was especially true in times when there were no Large Arbor fly reels and a fly lines wound on the thin axis of the reel gained a shape memory, causing difficulties in casting and as well rewinding, tangling and cracking of the line. However, the main use of the backing lines is to reduce the risk of losing trophy fish, which is able to pull the whole line from a fly fishing reel. If this happens, and the fly line will not jointed with backing line, the leader will be ruptured, in the worst case the fly line will be pulled out of the fly reel!
